Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that are important for good health and development. Because the body is not capable naturally of producing omega-3 fatty acids, they must be obtained from dietary sources. The main source of omega-3 fatty acids is oily fish.
Omega-3 oil contains several different fatty acids. The most important are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Research has shown that these fatty acids have a beneficial effect on the health of both adults and children.
The European Food Standards Agency ( EFSA ) recommends that in general you should consume 200 mg of EPA and DHA each day in order to maintain good health and well-being. This is equivalent to eating two portions of oily fish each week. For maximum benefit, the fish should be poached, baked or grilled, as fish prepared in these ways has a higher saturated fat content than fried fish.
For people who don’t like fish, taking an omega-3 supplement is an excellent alternative. Recently there have been claims in the media to the effect that certain species of fish, even when consumed on a weekly basis, do not satisfy body’s requirement for essential fatty acids. Some groups of people at certain stages of life will need to consume more of these fatty acids, for example, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, children and the elderly. The product content declaration will tell you how much EPA and DHA a particular product contains. Make sure that you choose a product with high levels of these fatty acids, at a minimum equivalent to the EFSA’s recommendations, as appropriate for your current phase of life. Taking a nutritional supplement can also be a good option if you are worried about the presence in fish of marine environmental toxins, such as heavy metals, dioxins, pesticides and PCBs. These substances tend to become more highly concentrated in fish such as tuna, which are high up the food chain. Such problems can be avoided by choosing products such as PureMax™ oil.
